The term "Boston Butt" comes from Colonial New England, where less desirable cuts of pork like the shoulder were packed into barrels known as "butts" for storage and shipment. These cuts became popular in Boston, hence the name "Boston Butt." It refers to the upper part of the pork shoulder and is often used for pulled pork due to its marbling and tenderness when smoked.
Smoking a Boston Butt typically requires about 1 to 1.5 hours per pound at 225°F. A 3-pound butt would take approximately 3 to 4 hours.
