Here’s a glimpse of what is in store for this big day:

  • Session 1: BUILDING A COMMUNITY CUSTOMER BASE | Joel Salatin, Polyface Farm
  • Too often farmers fail to consider neighbors as customers, but recent long-distance supply chain problems bring new urgency to localized sales. Farmers have a natural aversion to direct selling, but that is where middlemen make the profits. Enjoying retail prices not only enables higher income with less production, it also yields emotional encouragement from grateful customers. How to get, keep, and serve customers is a learned skill like any other. Building local food security creates producer and consumer resilience.

  • Session 2: FRUGAL FERTILITY | Joel Salatin, Polyface Farm
  • The 2022 spike in manufactured fertilizer prices affects the farmers dependent on off-farm soil amendments far more than those who build soil biology through carbon. In this new era, the chemical approach is losing to the biological. Soil organisms, from microscopic to the mega-sized earthworm, have built fertility for millennia. Feeding, nurturing, and leveraging these soil critters offers an end run around conventional fertilizer price hurdles. Compost, pasture cropping, forest-field integration, irrigation and other carbon-cycling techniques extend an affordable path forward.

  • Session 3: CONFIDENT DECISION-MAKING | Joel Salatin, Polyface Farm
  • The hardest thing in life is making decisions. The problem is that seldom is only one option in the column labeled “good.” How do we choose among various good options? And once we do make a decision, how confident are we in the choice? A consideration check list is a great tool to help us through the decision maize. What questions to ask and what objectives to pursue all bear on how we ultimately proceed. Setting up experiments, writing down goals, and being aware of as many alternatives as possible all help us make the right decision.

  • BONUS: “Financial Statements 101: Volume is Vanity, Profit is Sanity” | Ted LeBow, KTC
  • It doesn’t matter if you’re a start-up, an established business or a 5th generation farm, cash is your lifeblood. There is one REALLY simple way to make sure you’ve got cash—be profitable. In this 45-minute session, Ted LeBow, Co-CEO of Kitchen Table Consultants and Taste Profit Marketing will talk about how financial statements, budgeting and goal setting will help you make sure you are profitable. He will use real-life examples of how these financial statements have helped numerous Lancaster County businesses flourish.
